The Interchangeable Body

Dr. Linda Cendales address the complex issues related to transplant and speak about her work in the transplant program at Emory in which physicians transplant hearts, kidneys and pancreases, as well as other vital organs.

Background

In March 2011, Dr. Linda Cendales led a multidisciplinary team that performed Emory's first hand transplant and only the 14th such transplant in the U.S. Just a month earlier Emory University Hospital made headlines when surgeons completed a living donor kidney transplant from the head baseball coach at Wake Forest University to one of his players.

The field of transplantation is one of the most complex areas of modern medicine, with many ethical and economic issues surrounding it, and new immunosuppression drugs making procedures more widely available.

Dr. Cendales will address these issues and speak about her work in the transplant program at Emory in which physicians transplant hearts, kidneys and pancreases, as well as other vital organs.

Dr. Allan Kirk is an internationally recognized surgical scientist and authority on transplant immunology. He serves as a kidney/pancreas transplant surgeon at Emory University Hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
