Questions and Answers about Animal Research at Emory University

Where do these animals come from?

The majority come from companies which are federally licensed to provide animals to research institutions. Some come from breeding colonies maintained by the University, especially for animals with a genetic propensity to a disease being studied. This includes about half of the mice used at Emory. Emory does not use animals from County Animal Control programs, popularly known as the pound. (In earlier years a small percentage of animals did come from these programs, using animals that were already slated to die because there was no home for them anywhere.) And by policy Emory never buys or accepts animals from individual citizens.
