Art honoring pandemic classes

In photo above, l-r: Ralph Valenzuela (fulfillment), Jodie Guest, Vanda P. Hudson (fulfillment) Timothy Lash, Jacquelyn Berry (epidemiology), and Donald Harris (fulfillment).

Tim Lash (epidemiology) wanted to honor what he thought would be the only class to ever graduate during a global pandemic, so he commissioned a student art contest. But when it became clear COVID-19 was going to impact the 2020-21 class as well, he revised his plan with the help of Jodie Guest (epidemiology). The pair selected an outstanding submission by Grace Fletcher 20MPH from the original competition and used that image as the centerpiece of a 5 ½ ‘ x 5 ½ ‘ piece of plexiglass art. Signatures of all the epidemiology students from the classes of 2019-20 and 2020-21 float around the image forming a matte, and a quote from Dr. Anthony Fauci’s Emory commencement address adorns the bottom. The artwork is hung just inside the department’s main entrance, and Blake’s original painting hangs framed in Lash’s office.

FALL 2021

Off to a strong start

One positive thing to come out of the pandemic is that interest in public health has never been higher. As a result, we received our highest number of applications ever for the 2021-22 academic year—more than 4,000—and welcomed our largest incoming class—681 master-level students and 45 PhD students.

Also, despite limitations imposed by pandemic, we had our largest number of grant submissions ever—more than 600 proposals in 2021. Sponsored research in FY 2021 totaled $127 million. And we just finished our 27th consecutive year with a balanced budget.

The R. Randall Rollins building is scheduled to open Aug. 2022, within budget and with no major delays.

Kimberly Jacob Arriola

Kimberly Jacob Arriola has assumed her new post as dean of the Laney Graduate School and has joined the Office of the Provost leadership team as vice provost for graduate affairs. Arriola came to Rollins as a student in 1998 and joined the Department of Behavioral, Social, and Health Education Sciences as a senior faculty associate while still earning her MPH. In 2010, by then an associate professor, Arriola began a six-year term as director of graduate studies for BSHES. In 2015, she was promoted to full professor and, a year later, associate dean for academic affairs. In 2018, she was named Charles Howard Candler Professor and executive associate dean for academic affairs. Delia Lang is now serving as interim executive associate dean for academic affairs and Carmen Marsit is handling promotion and tenure. Read more here.

Lancet launches WASH commission

image
Matthew Freeman

The Lancet has launched the Lancet Commission on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene and named Matthew Freeman (environmental health and epidemiology) as one of 20 commissioners. “Many who work in this sector feel that this is an inflection point and that the interventions currently being delivered are both insufficient to improve access sustainably and equitably and are insufficient to improve health and wellbeing,” says Freeman. “Because of that, the commission was formed to set a course for where sector needs to go.”

The commission will release a report with its recommendations in 2022. Several other Rollins researchers will contribute, including Thomas Clasen, Bethany Caruso, and Sheela Sinharoy (all environmental health and global health).
