Landmark Study Treats ALS Patients
In a Phase I clinical trial, researchers are testing the safety of human neural stem cells injected into the spines of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Since the study began in January, three ALS patients have received several stem cell injections each. If the technique and the cells are deemed safe, further clinical studies may continue. Clot-Busting Drug May Be Natural Stroke Protector
The brain may use tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) as a natural response to the reduction in blood flow caused by a stroke. tPA is used as a drug to treat acute stroke, but scientists have found that mice produce tPA naturally in the brain's hippocampus in response to low oxygen caused by stroke. More research could lead to better drug therapy with tPA. Read more...

More Sugar = Heart Disease Risk
Data from a study of more than 6,000 adult men and women found that people who consumed more added sugar from processed foods and beverages were more likely to have higher cardiovascular disease risk factors, including higher triglyceride levels and higher ratios of triglycerides to HDL-C, or good cholesterol. Researchers will use the largest single grant ever to Emory's School of Nursing to turn the tide of deaths from childbirth in rural Ethiopia.
