Research Extras

The Emory Integrated Genomics Core consolidates the Cancer Genomics Shared Resource of the Winship Cancer Institute and the GRA Genomics Core of Emory School of Medicine. The combined core will create a top-tier genomics resource that is widely available to the Emory research community, integrating cutting-edge genomics technologies with downstream bioinformatics analysis.

More than 200 bicycle riders are expected to participate in the annual two-day, 200-mile AIDS Vaccine 200 (AV200) bicycle ride to benefit AIDS vaccine research at the Emory Vaccine Center. The event on May 18-19 is sponsored by Action Cycling Atlanta – a volunteer-run organization. This marks the 11th year of the AV200, which has raised more than $1 million for AIDS vaccine research.

More than 400 scientists, doctors and public health experts from 80 countries recently launched the Scientific Declaration on Polio Eradication, declaring that an end to the paralyzing disease is achievable and endorsing a comprehensive new strategy for a polio-free world by 2018. The polio declaration is housed online by the Emory Vaccine Center.

Genomics distinguishes toxic from harmless freshwater bacteria
Some strains of Aeromonas hydrophila, a common freshwater bacterium, can cause serious human infections, including flesh-eating disease. By sequencing the genomes of A. hydrophila strains and correlating that information with clinical data, scientists have found key factors present in the most agressive, hazardess bacteria that could provide new diagnostic potential. Researchers accurately predict cognitive decline
Using a noninvasive, infrared eye-tracking test, researchers have learned to predict impending cognitive decline, including mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease, up to three years in advance of clinical symptoms. The Visual Paired Comparison (VPC) task assesses memory function, an important function of the medial temporal lobe region of the brain. Early intervention could lead to more effective treatment. Marrow stem cell injections may relieve arthritis pain
A new cell treatment for osteoarthritis involves extracting bone marrow from a patient's hip, removing the plasma, and concentrating the remaining fluid in a centrifuge. The concoction is then injected directly into a damaged joint where cartilage has been eroded. Physicians hope that by introducing an abundance of marrow stem cells they can encourage the growth of healthier cells and help patients avoid surgery. Read more...

Fetal exposure to antiepileptic drug valproate impairs cognitive development
The anti-epileptic drug valproate has negative effects on children whose mothers take the drug during pregnancy. In a large study, valproate had a more severe effect than did other antiepileptic medications. Children did worse on IQ tests and measures of verbal and memory abilities and non-verbal functions, and the study also found an increase in anatomical birth defects. Read more...

Measuring the metabolome
Researchers in the clinical biomarkers lab are using high-definition mass spectrometry to explore the metabolome in blood and urine samples. This personal chemical signature includes the entire set of molecules generated as we absorb and digest food. By building a large reference base, researchers can mine the data to see patterns, identify and track natural changes, and link those to a particular disease. Read more...
