After nearly 30 years since its discovery, a fundamental question still remains about HIV: how does the virus slowly destroy the immune system? Emory immunologist and GRA Eminent Scholar Guido Silvestri, MD, and his colleagues are searching for the answer to that question using a method called comparative AIDS research. That is, they compare humans infected with HIV who develop AIDS with nonhuman primates from Africa infected with SIV, or simian immunodeficiency virus.
