SPRING 2021

Coming back together for commencement

We were able to come together to celebrate the Class of 2021 with a modified in-person Commencement ceremony on May 14 at the Georgia World Congress Center. While we had to adjust some aspects of the ceremony to comply with health and safety protocols—wearing masks and social distancing—the event featured many familiar elements: the bagpipes, wearing of academic regalia, presidential conferral of degrees, and individual recognition of the graduates.

This class earned their degrees during the public health crisis of the century, a distinction they will never forget. This year we awarded 648 MPH and MSPH degrees, including 30 dual degrees—which is about 60 percent of the dual degrees awarded at Emory this year. In addition, 33 students earned PhDs in the Laney graduate school.

The following awards were conferred at our 2021 commencement:

E. Lisa Chung 21MPH received the Marion Luther Brittain Award for graduate students, making her the first public health recipient of the award. The honor recognizes “significant, meritorious and devoted service to Emory University with no expectations of recognition or reward.” As the pandemic unfolded, Lisa got involved with multiple response efforts, from performing tests and delivering vaccines to mapping out prevention plans. She’ll continue her studies as a Rollins PhD student this fall.
