Dr. Eaton Named President-Elect of American Physiological Society
|
Douglas C. Eaton, PhD, distinguished professor of physiology at Emory University School of Medicine, is the new president-elect of the American Physiological Society (APS), a national organization of scientists with more than 10,500 members. The APS is a member of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), a coalition of 18 independent societies that plays an active role in lobbying for the interests of biomedical scientists.
Dr. Eaton's election was announced on March 31 and will take effect at the annual meeting of the APS in Washington, D.C. on April 17-22.
Dr. Eaton is director of Emory's Center for Cell and Molecular Signaling, which studies the process cells use to recognize and respond to external events, and how abnormalities in cellular signaling are associated with specific disease processes. During 30 years of research supported by the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Eaton and his colleagues have made significant discoveries about the molecular and genetic mechanisms involved in cellular signaling within the kidney, and signaling defects that may be responsible for some types of hypertension and electrolyte disorders. His work has led to a greater understanding of the relationship between diabetes and kidney function.
Dr. Eaton received his bachelor's degree from California Institute of Technology in 1967, a master's degree from Scripps Institute of Oceanography in 1969, and his PhD in neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego. He has been on the faculty at Emory since 1986.
