Steven Manoukian, MD, assistant professor of medicine (cardiology) at Emory University School of Medicine, and director of Interventional Cardiology at Emory Crawford Long Hospital, has been appointed president of the metro Atlanta Advisory Board of the American Heart Association (AHA) for the 2005-06 year. Una Hutton Newman, senior director of marketing for Emory Healthcare, has been named vice president.
Dr. Manoukian has been on the Board of Directors of the Metro Atlanta American Heart Association since 1998. During that time, he has represented the AHA in numerous professional and community presentations on the prevention of heart disease and stroke. As vice president in 2004-05, he co-chaired the organization's governance committee, which developed new operating principles and created a succession plan for the Metro Atlanta advisory board.
"The AHA is a great organization made up of people who are dedicated to heart health, said Dr. Manoukian. " I am looking forward to working closely with Una Newman to help lead the organization in making significant accomplishments in 2005-06, and beyond."
"Dr. Manoukian's insight and enthusiasm, is truly an asset to the organization," says Meagan Cherry, vice president of the Metro Atlanta AHA. "As a well-respected member of the medical community, he is dedicated to creating a physician advisory board which will include members from every medical institution in the city. Only by working together, can the American Heart Association achieve its goal of reducing death and disability from heart disease and stroke."
Dr. Manoukian received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed both his cardiology fellowship and his interventional cardiology fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine. He specializes in the treatment of coronary artery disease, performing procedures used to treat blockages of the arteries of the heart such as cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, and stent procedures. In addition, he practices preventive cardiology, which focuses on identifying the risk factors for heart disease and modifying them before heart disease becomes evident. Dr. Manoukian also volunteers his time as a medical reporter on Atlanta's Fox Affiliate, WAGA-TV, taking his message of prevention to the metro Atlanta community during his weekly report.
Una Hutton Newman has been with Emory Healthcare since 1996. She is responsible for marketing and brand management of Emory Healthcare, including four hospitals, The Emory Clinic, Inc., Wesley Woods Center, and 14 multi-specialty sites. As a member of the Metro Atlanta Advisory Board of the American Heart Association, Una has been instrumental in the growth of the Atlanta Heart Walk, and has helped lead Emory Healthcare to become one of the top five organizations in the nation in terms of total dollars raised. The Emory model for Heart Walk success has been used at numerous hospital systems across the country. Una and her staff have hosted countless teleconferences to mentor other healthcare providers to assist them in reaching their Heart Walk financial and walker goals.
"At the Metro Atlanta American Heart Association we look forward to an extremely productive year with the leadership of Dr. Manoukian and Ms. Newman," says Cherry.
