Emory Crawford Long Hospital Retention and Recruitment Nursing Awards Presented
Recognized for their outstanding commitment to nursing and excellence in patient care, eight nurses practicing in the medical surgical unit (Unit 71) at Emory Crawford Long Hospital were recently honored during a banquet ceremony presented by the hospital's Retention and Recruitment Committee.

"It's a challenge to identify, recruit and retain outstanding nurses, which makes opportunities to recognize and honor excellence all the more important and something to celebrate as a unit and organization," said Debbie Barker, RN, nurse manager and committee chair. "When our committee suggested an awards banquet to recognize quality nursing care, leadership eagerly approved it."

The banquet was held Nov. 6 at the Emory Conference Center in Atlanta. Dr. Neil B. Shulman, author of Doc Hollywood was the master of ceremonies, and more than 100 people attended -- including Susan Grant, RN, new Emory chief nursing officer, and Al Blackwelder, chief operating officer for Emory Crawford Long Hospital.

Other attendees included hospital staff, members of the multidisciplinary team, and Kenneth Leeper, MD, medical director for the unit. Lucia Kamm Steigelman, RN, PhD, spoke on the topic "Realizing Your Dreams." Barker, along with Pam Cosper, RN, department director, and Georgia Jackson, RN, clinical nurse specialist, created a two-tier balloting process for the awards. Nominations were submitted by staff for a variety of categories and included a list of behaviors/actions/reasons why the person was nominated. Then, in a blind ballot, team members voted on the actions presented – not the name of the person.

This year's award winners were:

- Bessie Davis, PCA -- Outstanding PCA/UC Clinical Practice

- Paul Smith, RN -- Outstanding Preceptor

- Mary Tomsy Thekkan -- RN Team Spirit

- Kim Harden-Grant, RN -- Outstanding Patient Advocate

- Tim Snabes, RN-- Outstanding Clinical Practice - Darla Bardakjy, RN -- Excellent Leadership

- Shawn Ledford, RN, Mary Tomsy Thekkan RN, and Debbie Barker RN -- Perfect Attendance

- Genevieve Smith, RN -- Outstanding New Graduate
