|Emory University Hospital and Emory Crawford Long Hospital are participating in the first-ever national campaign to save 100,000 lives by implementing proven health care improvement techniques.
The 100,000 Lives Campaign is a nationwide initiative of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) to radically reduce morbidity and mortality in American health care. Building on the successful work of health care providers all over the world, the campaign is introducing proven best practices across the country to extend or save as many as 100,000 lives.
"We're honored to play a part in this effort to promote patient safety and quality," said Chief Quality Officer William Bornstein, MD, PhD. "It's important that we stand up and be counted as committed to this ideal, which is entirely compatible with our institutional goals and values. Our participation in the IHI initiative provides us additional opportunities to apply the best knowledge and techniques to achieve the greatest improvement for the safety and care of our patients."
According to Amy Nally, clinical performance improvement specialist, the campaign is primarily designed to focus attention on high-risk patient care topics.
"Both Emory University Hospital and Emory Crawford Long Hospital are actively implementing six evidence-based interventions: deploying rapid response teams at the first sign of patient decline; following quality guidelines for treatment of acute heart attacks; preventing central line infections, ventilator associated pneumonia, surgical site infections and adverse drug events," explained Nally.
"Our teams at both hospitals are working together to expand and optimize these interventions at each site. Most of the initiatives outlined in the national campaign have been ongoing at Emory hospitals for some time, however. The 100K Lives Campaign allows our hospitals to join a larger coalition of health care providers establishing better patient outcomes nationwide," she said.
Representatives from IHI visited Emory University Hospital in March as part of its informal tour of participating organizations.
"We wanted to take the opportunity to see Emory's progress up to this point, where the hospitals have been successful, and what challenges they encountered throughout the campaign," said Beth Meagher, IHI field coordinator. "Emory has great leadership which has demonstrated a real commitment to patient quality and safety."
In December, Georgia's Partnership for Health and Accountability presented Emory Healthcare with a First Place Quality and Patient Safety Award in the Hospital/Systems category. The award program recognizes health care organizations for achievements in reducing the risk of medical errors and improving patient safety and medical outcomes. Emory's award winning program was associated with the IHI Campaign's prevention of central line infection initiative.
The 100K Lives Campaign was formally unveiled in 2004, and has been endorsed by such distinguished health care organizations as the American Medical Association, the American Nurses Association, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Emory Hospitals joined this campaign shortly after it was unveiled.
