Sheryl Gabram, MD, Joins Emory Winship Cancer Institute
Jonathan Simons, MD, Director of the Emory Winship Cancer Institute, has announced the appointment of Sheryl Gabram, MD, MBA, FACS, as Professor of Surgery in Emory University's School of Medicine and Winship's Breast Cancer Clinical Program. She will also serve as Director of the Avon Breast Cancer Center and Director of Oncologic Services at the Georgia Cancer Center of Excellence at Grady.

Dr. Gabram joins Winship from Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois, where she was Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery and Director of the Breast Clinical Program at the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center. She also served as Vice Chairman of Surgery in the General Residency Surgery Program. Prior to her tenure at Loyola University Medical Center, she was Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington.

Board certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Gabram earned her medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., conducted her residency at the Washington Hospital Center and a fellowship at Hartford Hospital, University of Connecticut. She also holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Connecticut.

Dr. Gabram's clinical interests are in surgical oncology focusing on breast cancer. Her research interests include studies on the psychological and immunological impact of breast biopsy for cancer diagnosis as well as sentinel node and bone marrow micrometastases in women with clinical T1 or T2N0M0 Breast Cancer. Research projects that Dr. Gabram currently has in progress include a randomized prospective trial measuring the effect of a breast cancer risk education session to primary care physicians, on which she is principal investigator, and she is co-principal investigator on a clinical study comparing standard versus partial breast irradiation.

Dr. Gabram is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. She has been named by the patient resource guide Castle Connolly as one of America's Top Doctors for three consecutive years. Her other recent honors include receiving the Arthur G. Michel, MD Award for Excellence in Breast Care from the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, and her selection as one of Chicago Magazine's Top Doctors. Additionally, she is a member of several prestigious professional societies, including a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Central Surgical Association.
