Dong M. Shin, MD, Appointed to Associate Director of Emory Winship Cancer Institute
Jonathan Simons, MD, director of the Emory Winship Cancer Institute, and Fadlo Khuri, MD, Associate Director for Clinical and Translational Research and Chief Medical Officer, announced that Dong M. Shin, MD, Professor of Hematology, Oncology, and Otolaryngology, has been appointed Associate Director of Academic Development for Winship.

In this new position, Dr. Shin will develop and implement a formal system of mentorship for faculty members within the Department of Hematology and Oncology. The new initiative is aimed at providing all faculty with a formal career development program.

"We are delighted to announce Dr. Shin's appointment as Associate Director of Academic Development," said Dr. Simons. "He is internationally recognized for his stellar scientific research and his patient-focused clinical work, and he will bring tremendous experience and insight into this new initiative."

"The purpose of this initiative," says Dr. Shin, who also serves as Director of the Cancer Chemoprevention Program and Co-Director of the Translational Lung Cancer and Aerodigestive Tract Malignancies Program at Winship, "is to define and promote academic career development for all of our faculty members. We will encourage and guide pursuit of career development grants from the NIH, hold an annual workshop for trainees and faculty members, and establish an advisory board comprised of senior faculty. A formal career development program will help build a strong foundation for faculty who are dedicated to making a difference in cancer research and patient care."

"Dr. Shin's leadership will be instrumental in developing an exceptional program for our faculty," says Dr. Khuri. "He is widely recognized and respected for his academic scholarship, mentorship, and clinical skill. He has built a remarkable career on hard work and a caring, collaborative approach to science and medicine. We are lucky to have a physician of Dr. Shin's caliber building this program here at Winship."

Dr. Shin earned his medical degree from Yonsei University, College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea. He joined the faculty of the Winship Cancer Institute in 2003 after 15 years as a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. Shin's clinical interests include treatment and prevention of head and neck cancer, lung cancer, thymoma and mesothelioma. His research interests include chemoprevention and biomarkers in head and neck cancer, nanotherapeutics, and biomedical research for novel technology development in collaboration with researchers at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Shin is the recipient of numerous awards and author of more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and books.
