Diagnosis, Triggers, Treatments and Research for Headaches and Migraines
A dull ache starts and then suddenly it feels like you have a rubber band around your head. Sound familiar? Whether it is that gnawing dull ache or a full-blown, knock-down-drag-out migraine, thousands of Americans suffer from headaches every day. According to the American Council for Headache Education, 95 percent of women and 90 percent of men in America experienced at least one headache in the past year. What causes headaches, how do we know which kind we have and what can we do about them?

On February 18, Atlanta's leading nurses, physicians, clinicians and researchers will discuss this head-pounding subject at the annual Virginia Lee Franklin Memorial Conference in Neurology, sponsored by Emory University's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, and co-sponsored by Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital. The conference will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the Atlanta Marriott Century Center Hotel, located at I-85 and Clairmont Road.

Experts will discuss the diagnosis of headaches, identify early symptoms and triggers of migraine headaches, examine complementary and alternative therapies for headaches, describe the pharmacologic management of headaches and discuss qualitative research on headaches in perimenopausal women.

The conference, originally initiated to benefit Emory nursing students and faculty, now draws a large audience from nurses and health care professionals. The conference also is open to members of the general public who are interested in learning more about headaches.
