New Faculty Member Joins TravelWell, Emory's Travelers' Health Clinic
Carlos Franco, MD, MPH, an expert in travelers' health and tropical medicine, has joined Emory University School of Medicine as an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, and Emory's TravelWell Clinic. Dr. Franco, who was educated and spent his early career in Mexico, is no stranger to Emory. He completed his training at Emory as a resident in internal medicine in the Department of Medicine, was chief resident in internal medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital and was a fellow in the Division of Infectious Diseases. He also received a Masters in Public Health in International Health at Emory's Rollins School of Public Health.

Dr. Franco attended medical school at La Salle University School of Medicine in Mexico City. Following his post-graduate training, he spent several years in a leadership position in the Ministry of Health in Mexico. He also cared for patients in a private practice.

Dr. Franco will spend the majority of his time seeing patients and conducting research at Emory's TravelWell clinic. Established in 1988, TravelWell has been a nationally and internationally recognized leader in pre-travel advice and education for those traveling abroad, as well as in post-travel care. The clinic serves the general public, business travelers, large corporations, volunteers, missionaries, immigrants and refugees.

"I couldn't be more thrilled to have Dr. Franco join us at TravelWell," says Phyllis Kozarsky, MD, professor of medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at Emory and medical director of TravelWell. "His expertise in the field of travel and tropical medicine will enhance the program immeasurably."

As international travel continues to increase with more than 700 million people crossing international borders annually, so does the need for expert pre-travel health consultation, preventive medications and immunizations, and post-travel care. Despite challenges such as 9/11 and SARS, travel continues to grow -- making it even more important that those who travel understand the health risks, how to best protect themselves, self-treat when appropriate and access medical care as needed. The profile of the traveler is no longer just the healthy adult. Travelers now include children, pregnant women, those with multiple chronic illnesses, immune deficiency and transplants. TravelWell serves these needs for people living in metro Atlanta and those traveling far away from home.

"I am excited and honored to join the faculty at Emory and TravelWell," says Dr. Franco. "TravelWell is an outstanding operation with a highly regarded reputation. With my coming on board, I hope we can further expand the program, while continuing to care for a broad spectrum of patients. Hearing the stories of the patients and their experiences or the experiences in which they are about to embark upon is the most interesting part of the job. I also look forward to the teaching and research aspects associated with the clinic."

Long range plans for Drs. Kozarsky and Franco include creating a Tropical Medicine Clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital, which will be designed for immigrants and refugees seeking care for various illnesses acquired from their countries of birth or through which they have migrated. The doctors also hope to focus on vaccine research in the near future.

Dr. Franco is married to Maribel Barragan. They live in Atlanta.

TravelWell is located in the Medical Office Tower at Emory Crawford Long Hospital, 550 Peachtree Street, with a branch at the Emory Clinic, 1525 Clifton Road.
