Emory's Emergency Medicine Department Sponsors Winter Clothing Drive for Patients
Recognizing that many patients at Grady Memorial Hospital are in need of warm clothes this season, Rick Spurlock, MD, a first-year Emory School of Medicine emergency medicine resident, is spearheading a winter clothing drive to benefit Grady patients and the homeless population of downtown Atlanta. The drive runs through February 26, 2005.

Dr. Spurlock says he was inspired to spearhead the clothing drive based on his previous experience volunteering in Miami, Florida, and international missionary work in Central America and Haiti.

"I really like doing social work, and it was really important for me to get involved and help out here," he says. "And from what I understand, much of the population here in downtown Atlanta is homeless, and when it gets cold and rainy, a lot of them get sick because they don't have warm clothing."

Dr. Spurlock says the drive is in dire need of gently used coats, jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, blankets, scarves, hats, shoes, and socks. New underwear in all sizes is also needed for both men and women. Social service workers will evaluate patients to determine who needs clothing items.

Community members interested in donating clothing are asked to bring clothing items to the Office of Social Services on the first floor at Grady, Room 1A006. Donations will be accepted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For more information, please call Lucas Banks, social worker in the Emergency Care Center, at (404) 616-5193. Those interested in volunteering can contact Dr. Spurlock at rspur1@hotmail.com, or Tonya Nichol, MD, a first-year emergency medicine resident at Emory, at tmnichol@yahoo.com.
