New Digital Mammography Study Opens at Emory's Winship Cancer Institute
Emory University's Winship Cancer Institute recently opened a new stereoscopic digital mammography clinical trial. The trial, which targets women with a high risk for development of breast cancer, compares a standard digital mammogram with a stereoscopic digital mammogram, which provides a three-dimensional image.

The primary goal of the study is to evaluate this new technique in a screening setting for improved early detection of breast lesions. Patients enrolled in the trial will receive a standard digital mammogram and the research stereoscopic digital mammogram. The research digital mammogram is free to study participants. Carl D'Orsi, MD, director of Winship's Breast Imaging Center, is the primary investigator.

To be eligible to participate in the study a woman must be at high risk for the development of breast cancer (any of the following must apply):

* Personal history of breast cancer, regardless of age.

* Over 40 years of age and a first-degree relative (mother, sister or daughter) with either pre-menopausal or bilateral breast cancer.

* More than one first-degree relative with any breast cancer.

* Positive BRCA I or II gene, regardless of age.

* Prior benign breast biopsy that included a pathological diagnosis of atypical lobular hyperplasia and/or lobular carcinoma in-situ, regardless of age.

* Undergone mantle irradiation for treatment of lymphoma, regardless of age.

Dr. D'Orsi is an internationally recognized expert in mammography. He is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, a founder of The Society of Breast Imaging and Professor of Radiology and Hematology / Oncology at Emory University.

Recruitment for this clinical trial will continue through July, 2007. For additional information or to enroll in the trial, please call (404) 778-3009.
