4th Annual Boots & Blue Jeans Event to Raise Money for Grady NICU
If you have ever wondered what it would be like to be part of the Wild West…now's your chance to show off your best boots and dungarees while raising your hat for a good cause -- saving critically ill babies.

The Henry W. Grady Health System Foundation is calling all would-be cowboys and cowgirls to take part in a western ride for charity Sept. 28 - the 4th Annual Boots & Blue Jeans event benefiting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Grady Memorial Hospital.

"Premature infants have many special needs that make their care different from that of full-term infants." says William Sexson , MD, FAAP, associate dean for clinical affairs and vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine. "The neonatal intensive care unit or NICU is designed to provide an atmosphere that limits stress to the infant and meets basic needs of warmth, humidity, nutrition and protection to assure proper growth and development."

As the region's designated referral center for high-high risk mothers and babies, the Grady NICU delivers expert medical care and averages over 130 admissions per month.

Premature babies lack the body fat necessary to maintain their body temperature, even when swaddled with blankets. So doctors use incubators made of transparent plastic that completely surround the infant to keep him or her warm, decrease the chance of infection and limit water loss from delicate skin.

Today, adding additional new incubators will dramatically enhance doctors' ability to deliver state-of-the-art neonatal care, says Sexson.

Your support can make a difference. Please put on your cowboy and cowgirl best for the 4th Annual Boots & Blue Jeans event.
