Prostate Cancer Link to Virus Provides Possible Treatment Target

Two discoveries about prostate cancer could lead to a promising treatment. Urologist John Petros recently developed a test identifying XMRV (xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus) in some prostate cancers. Infectious disease expert Raymond Schinazi found that four drugs used to treat HIV can inhibit XMRV in the laboratory. If better screening methods can routinely identify XMRV in prostate cancer patients, and if drug cocktails can be developed to treat the virus, a new cancer therapy could be in the works. Full story >
