New phase I trials unit
Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute has opened a phase I trials unit.
Dedicated space was needed because patients often spend extensive time at the unit for precisely timed blood draws and monitoring of potential side effects, says the unit’s director, Donald Harvey. The unit is the largest in Georgia, and Winship will apply for a U01 grant from the National Cancer Institute, which would give it unfettered access to the NCI portfolio of novel compounds. Thirty-five of the 66 NCI-designated cancer centers have phase I trial units, and only 13 of them are U01-designated.
