I am writing to announce that Joel Saltz MD, PhD, will join Stony Brook University as the inaugural Cherith Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics. In addition, he will hold joint appointments in the Departments of Pathology and Computer Sciences and serve as Vice President for Informatics of Stony Brook Medicine as well as Associate Director for Informatics of the Stony Brook Cancer Center. Joel will begin at Stony Brook September 1.

I would like to thank Joel for his service to Emory. In his time here, Joel led the Biomedical Informatics Department (BMI) and established and developed the Center for Comprehensive Informatics (CCI). These innovative areas have established key contacts on national and international levels and have played an important role in grant renewals for the ACTSI and the Center for AIDS Research. On behalf of Emory Medicine, I wish Joel the very best in his new endeavor. Joel will continue to collaborate with Emory investigators on biomedical informatics initiatives.

I am pleased to announce that Lance Waller, PhD, Rollins Professor and Chair of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Rollins School of Public Health, will be serving as interim chair/director of BMI and CCI. Lance joined Emory in 1998 as an associate professor of biostatistics. He was promoted to professor in 2003 and was elected the same year to fellowship in the American Statistical Association. He was named chair in 2009. I look forward to working with Lance in continuing to build on BMI's and CCI's creative and innovative work.
