As my term as CEO of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center draws to a close, and I prepare to begin my work on behalf of Emory's new Healthcare Innovation Program, I'm reminded of the many people to whom I owe thanks. When I first came to Emory, some of the key qualities that attracted me were the sense of collegiality I found here and the extraordinary quality of the faculty and staff who make our institution great. Working with you over the past three years has only deepened my admiration and appreciation for you and the outstanding work that you do. Thanks for all that you have taught me and all that we have accomplished together.

As much as I have enjoyed leading the health sciences in general, I am equally excited to now focus my efforts on innovation in health care. The basic mission of the Healthcare Innovation Program is to explore, disseminate, and apply knowledge about the delivery of and response to health and healing in order to benefit society. This is an area that has long been of interest to me, and the recent health care legislation makes this a uniquely opportune time to pursue this interest. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to do so at Emory and to be able to work with great colleagues from across the university, region, and country.

I look forward to continuing to work with you in this effort and to provide my ongoing support to Dr. Wright Caughman as he assumes leadership of the WHSC. He is privileged—as I have been—to work among such a truly talented and dedicated group of people.

Best wishes,

Fred Sanfilippo
