Our vision in the Woodruff Health Sciences Center is transforming health and healing... together. That last word makes the first word possible. Together, with support from collaborators, trustees, donors, and friends, we are working to pioneer discoveries to prevent and treat disease, to prepare the next generation to save and improve lives, and to provide the highest-quality clinical care possible. Following are examples of accomplishments over the past year:

  • Emory was awarded $28.5 million as part of a second round of federal funding for the National Children’s Study, a collaborative to prevent and treat problems such as birth defects, autism, and diabetes.
  • The 120-bed Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital opened to facilitate better recovery times, safety, and patient satisfaction by concentrating ortho services at one location.
  • Scientists at Yerkes National Primate Research Center developed the first transgenic monkey for Huntington’s disease.
  • The Rollins School of Public Health broke ground on a $90 million building, which will double the school’s current space when it opens in 2010.
  • The nursing and medical schools staged their first joint simulation ER team training involving entire classes in both schools.
  • Emory physicians provided $29.2 million in charity care in Emory facilities in addition to $21.4 million in uncompensated care at Grady Hospital. Faculty and students played a key role in communicating the value of Grady’s trauma and other services to legislators and community leaders during this public hospital’s recent financial crisis.

These and other accomplishments throughout this book illustrate some of the many ways that we are making our vision a reality.
