Emory names Levy acting chair and clinical service chief in psychiatry

The following is an announcement on behalf of Thomas J. Lawley, dean of the School of Medicine, and John T. Fox, president and CEO of Emory Healthcare:

Effective October 6, Emory University School of Medicine and Emory Healthcare have named Steven T. Levy, MD, as acting chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and as acting clinical service chief in psychiatry for Emory Healthcare.

Levy, who began his Emory career in 1974, is professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and holds the Bernard C. Holland Chair of Psychiatry. Levy will hold these positions while Emory investigates allegations against former chair Charles B. Nemeroff, MD, PhD, about his financial relationships with pharmaceutical companies. Nemeroff voluntarily stepped down as chair pending resolution of the investigation.

Currently, Levy is chief of psychiatry at Grady Memorial Hospital, head of the psychiatry section of The Emory Clinic, vice chair for clinical services and academic affairs in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and director of Emory's Psychoanalytic Institute.

“Dr. Levy is a valued, long-standing excellent faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences,” says Thomas J. Lawley, dean of Emory’s School of Medicine. “We look forward to his leadership as he serves as acting chair for the department.”

Emory Healthcare CEO John T. Fox says, “Dr. Levy is a highly regarded clinical leader within Emory Healthcare and will continue to provide excellent clinical leadership for the psychiatry service."

At Grady, Levy is involved with the Central Fulton Community Mental Health Center, which he helped found and develop to provide high- quality mental health care to individuals who would not otherwise receive it. He is a driving force behind what has become one of largest and best public community mental health centers in the Southeast.

In addition to his work at Grady, Levy's scholarly work focuses on psychoanalysis. He is editor of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. He also serves on the Emory President's Task Force for Mental Health. Levy regularly teaches courses on psychoanalysis in Emory’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center, at Emory College, and in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. He works with medical students and trains house officers at the medical school, hospitals, and clinics. Levy received a bachelor of arts from Queens College and a medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine.
