Mini Medical School 101 Returns - Tue, 04 Oct 2005 07:00 EST

Emory University's popular Mini Medical School 101 for the general public returns next month with a series of lectures entitled "Health and Disease in the 21st Century: What Science Has to Say About Living Long and Living Well."

New students as well as returning alumni -- twenty-somethings as well as seniors -- will find provocative new insights into the basis of good health and successful aging.

Some of Emory's leading professors in the School of Medicine will sort out good science from hype in areas that include the heart and the brain; obesity, diet, nutrition and fitness; stress, anxiety and depression; chronic diseases such as diabetes, and stage-of-life issues like hormone replacement therapy.

The course director again will be Randy Martin, MD, the Channel 2 health reporter, professor of medicine and director of echocardiology at Emory. Dr. Martin will also deliver the first lecture in the series, entitled "The Skinny on Nutrition and Health."

Classes will be held on five consecutive Tuesdays at 7pm-9pm, from October 4 to November 1, in the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Administration Building auditorium on the Emory campus. Tuition is $85 (with a 15 percent discount for past Mini Medical School alumni and Emory faculty and staff). The fee includes refreshments, a class binder with handouts, an Emory Mini Medical School T-shirt, and a "diploma" awarded upon completion. Free parking is available in the Michael Street parking deck, with shuttles to transport students to the auditorium.

To register, call the Center for Lifelong Learning at 404-727-6000 or visit the Web site at http://www.cll.emory.edu/minimed/.

Predictive Health Symposium: Seeking Ponce's Dream - Mon, 19 Dec 2005 08:00 EST

Sponsored by the Emory/Georgia Tech Research Institute for Predictive Health

Someday we will be able to identify patients at risk for disease long before symptoms appear and stop disease before it starts.

Even had Juan Ponce de Leon found the fabled fountain of youth, it still would not have saved the explorer from an arrow when he visited "Pascua de Florida" in 1521. Today, the promise of prolonged, if not perpetual health is as potent a motivator as it was for Ponce de Leon. Existing and emerging science and technology give substance to the hope, even expectation, that we can understand health and how to keep it at a depth that was unimaginable even a decade ago. We will know how to live longer and better, but translating that understanding into practice poses challenges beyond science and technology. Extended life spans will require major changes in how human beings - scientists, health practitioners, people in general - behave.

This symposium will engage biomedical scientists and leading thinkers in conversations about what the new biomedicine can be and how we can make it work.

The Research Institute for Predictive Health -- a collaboration between Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology -- is creating a new model of health and healing for the 21st century. This new paradigm will define the unique intrinsic and environmental characteristics that predict disease risk for individuals and will emphasize definition and maintenance of health rather than treatment of disease.

Keynote Speakers:

Lee Hood, PhD
Institute for Systems Biology, Seattle

Ralph Snyderman, MD
Duke University Health System

Tom Wolfe
Author

Other Invited Speakers Include:

Martin Blaser, MD
New York University Medical Center

Denis Cortese, MD
The Mayo Clinic

Eric Green, MD, PhD
National Human Genome Research Institute

Linda Griffith, PhD
Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Stan Hazen, MD, PhD
The Cleveland Clinic

Muin Khoury, MD, PhD
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

James Marks, MD, PhD
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Emory and Georgia Tech Presenters Include:

Wayne Alexander, MD, PhD
Gang Bao, PhD
Sam Dudley, MD, PhD
Don Giddens, PhD
Michael M.E. Johns, MD
Jeffrey Koplan, MD, MPH
David H. Ledbetter, PhD
Robert Nerem, PhD
Francois Sainfort, MD
David Stephens, MD
Steve Warren, PhD

The Research Institute for Predictive Health gratefully acknowledges the support of the Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center Fund for making this symposium possible.
