(ATLANTA) Emory Eye Center physician and neuro-ophthalmologist Nancy J. Newman was recently awarded the American Neurological Association's (ANA) Distinguished Teacher Award. The award was established in order to recognize outstanding accomplishments in teaching neurology students. Its purpose is to encourage efforts to recognize and reward contributions by gifted and talented teachers in neurology. She will be recognized at the October 2003 ANA annual meeting in San Francisco. "We are so pleased that Dr. Newman has been recognized on a national level for her many talents -- not only in her teaching accomplishments but also in her mentoring of medical students," says Thomas M. Aaberg Sr., MD, chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Emory University and director of the Emory Eye Center. "The level of excellence in her scholarship, teaching and professional service are unsurpassed." Dr. Newman was appointed the LeoDelle Jolley Chair of Ophthalmology in February 2002, an honor that reflected the broad array of her professional talents. The LeoDelle Jolley Chair was created after Mrs. Jolley's death in fall 2001. In 1993, she made plans in her estate for a significant gift to the Emory Eye Center, resulting in the Jolley Chair. In his remarks to the assembled group of physicians and Emory Eye Center staff members at her chair award in 2002, Dean Thomas J. Lawley, MD, said, "Dr. Newman is one of the priceless treasures at the Emory School of Medicine. She is a compassionate and brilliant clinician and researcher. But she is also a teacher, and a teacher without peer. She was named Teacher of the Year by the Emory Medical School First Year Class in 1992, and again by the Eye Center residents in 1994." A graduate of Princeton University and the Courtauld Institute, University of London, Dr. Newman received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She was an intern, resident, and chief resident in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital and a clinical neuro-ophthalmology fellow at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Newman joined the Emory University School of Medicine faculty in 1989. She quickly distinguished herself by being named an associate professor with tenure in 1994 and was appointed full professor in 1999. She has a joint appointment as Professor of Neurology. She also serves as an Instructor in Neurological Surgery at Emory and has been Lecturer in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School since 1991. Since joining the faculty at Emory University, Dr. Newman has pursued and continued a productive scholarly program. She is currently principal investigator on two major clinical trials. She has been principal author or co-author more than 200 articles in print. She was the co-editor of the prestigious Walsh and Hoyt's Clinical Neuro-Ophthalmology, 5th edition, Williams and Wilkins (1998), and is currently editing the revised 6th edition. |
