Leader
in Mammography to Join Winship Cancer Institute and Emory Faculty
ATLANTA--Jonathan
Simons, MD, Director of The Winship Cancer Institute (WCI) at Emory
University, has announced the appointment of Carl J. D'Orsi, MD, as
Program Director for Oncologic Imaging at WCI and Director of the Division
of Breast Imaging. He will be a professor of Hematology/Oncology and
Radiology.
Dr. D'Orsi will also oversee
development and operation of the Avon Breast Cancer Center at Grady
Memorial Hospital, which is being built as part of the Governor's Cancer
Coalition and is the first Center of Excellence designated by Governor
Roy Barnes.
"We are delighted that Dr.
D'Orsi will be joining our faculty," said Dr. Simons. "He is considered
one of the world's leading experts in mammography, and he brings with
him a wealth of experience in radiologic imaging."
Dr. D'Orsi comes to WCI and
Emory from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester,
Massachusetts, where he holds dual professorships in Surgery and Pathology.
He is also Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Radiology
at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and lecturer on Radiology
at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Among the many associations of
which he is a member, Dr. D'Orsi is a founder of The Society of Breast
Imaging and currently serves as Chairman of The Breast Cancer Task Force
of the American College of Radiology. He also is a member of the Association
of Cancer Research, the Society for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, American
Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and Past President of the Society
for Advancement of Women's Imaging.
Dr. D'Orsi earned his doctoral
degree from State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in
New York. During his career, he has served as Assistant Director of
Radiology at the Charles A. Dana Cancer Research Center in Boston, and
as Clinical Instructor in Radiology and Assistant Professor of Radiology
at Harvard Medical School. He has authored or co-authored more than
200 journal publications, book chapters, abstracts and professional
presentations and currently serves as editor for Radiology, The Breast
Journal, and Seminars in Breast Disease.

and compassionate care to patients with cancer."
