Paul Sternberg Jr., M.D., director of Vitreoretinal Surgery and Disease at the Emory Eye Center, recently was selected as a recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) Lew R. Wasserman Merit Award.

This $55,000 award will help Dr. Sternberg, who is a retina surgeon, further his scientific research into promising treatments for retinal disorders, including macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness for individuals over age 65.

RPB is the world's leading philanthropic organization supporting eye research. The organization has awarded Emory a total of $1,757,600 in grants.

Since 1960, RPB has channeled more than $157 million to medical institutions throughout the country.
