MARTORELL NAMED CHAIRMAN OF INTERNATIONAL HEALTH AT EMORY

Dr. Reynaldo Martorell, Robert W. Woodruff Professor of International Nutrition at Emory University, will lead the Department of International Health into the next century as the newly appointed Chairman.

A native of Honduras, Dr. Martorell graduated from St. Louis University in anthropology and received his Ph.D. in biological anthropology from the University of Washington. He was formerly the Leading Professor of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University and Professor of Nutrition in the Food Research Institute at Stanford. At Stanford, he was also an affiliated faculty member in anthropology, human biology, Latin American studies and Division of Geographic Medicine.

Dr. Martorell is recognized as a world leader for his work in nutrition. He is the current president of the Society for International Nutrition Research of the American Institute of Nutrition and serves on the steering committees of UNICEF's State of the World's Children, 1998, and the Global Initiative for Effective Nutrition Programs. He is an advisor to the International Dietary Energy Consultancy Group, technical advisor to the Food and Nutrition Program of the Pan American Health Organization and is Scientific Advisor to the Human Nutrition Institute of the International Life Sciences Institute. He is a member of the Committee on the Prevention of Micronutrient Deficiencies, Board on International Health and Food and Nutrition board, Institute of Medicine, and the Board of Directors of the International Foundation for Developing Countries.
