Steven T. Levy, M.D., F.A.P.A., professor and chief of psychiatry at Grady Memorial Hospital, director of the Emory Psychoanalytic Institute and vice chairman for academic affairs, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Emory University School of Medicine, has been named the Bernard C. Holland Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

The Bernard C. Holland chair of psychiatry and behavior sciences was created through an endowment from Arthur L. Montgomery of Atlanta, former chairman of the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and his wife, Julie. Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery established the endowment as the Montgomery Psychiatry Fund in 1979. Bernard C. Holland, M.D., is professor emeritus and former chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine.

Jeffrey L. Houpt, M.D., dean, Emory University School of Medicine, originally came to Emory as chairman of the Department of Psychiatry following Dr. Holland's retirement from Emory. He said, "Dr. Holland was an important figure in the development of Emory's continuing leadership in the psychoanalytic approach to both emotional problems and the achievement of a richer, emotionally full life. Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery's generosity provides a lasting tribute to Dr. Holland and significant strength to this aspect of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences' programs. As director of the Emory Psychoanalytic Institute and an accomplished clinician, teacher and researcher, Dr. Levy is an excellent choice for the new professorship."

Dr. Levy received his bachelor's degree from Queens College and his medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine. He conducted his residency training in adult psychiatry at Yale University and his psychoanalytic training at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Dr. Levy came to Emory University School of Medicine as an assistant professor of psychiatry in 1974.

Dr. Levy's membership in professional organizations include the American Psychoanalytic Association, the International Psychoanalytic Association, the Association for Academic Psychiatry, the American Psychiatric Association, the Georgia Psychiatric Association and the Atlanta Psychoanalytic Society. Dr. Levy is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and has served as chairman of several committees for the American Psychoanalytic Association. He has served on the editorial boards of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, The Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and Depression. Currently, he is editor of the Monograph Series of the American Psychoanalytic Association. Dr. Levy has authored two books and numerous papers, book reviews and book chapters. He was the recipient of the Liddle Fund Grant from the American Psychoanalytic Association in 1983-84, and won the Journal Prize of the American Psychoanalytic Association in 1988. He is widely known for his work on the theory of psychoanalytic technique.

"Dr. Levy is one of our most outstanding directors, teachers and scholars," said Charles B. Nemeroff, M.D., Ph.D., Reunette W. Harris Professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory. "It is only fitting that he be recognized in this fashion, particularly by receving a chair named after Dr. Holland, the first chairman of psychiatry at Emory."
