Emory Medicine, Winter 1999 - Commencement

Pomp and Other Circumstances

Amid all the excitement this past May surrounding the presence of the Dalai Lama on the Emory campus, the annual graduation rituals took place, including the matriculation of 105 new MDs. The medical school also awarded six combined MD/PhDs, two MD/MPH degrees; and, through its allied health programs, 33 masters in physical therapy, two MMSc degrees in radiation oncology physics, and 34 Ob/Gyn nurse-practitioner certifications.

The 1998 valedictory oration - "Can Physicians Be Scientists?" - was delivered by Director of the National Cancer Institute Richard Klausner.

The following faculty received special recognition:

Alan Stoudemire, (Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences) was selected by the Class of 1998 as an honorary member and marched along with the class as they entered Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church.

Kyle Petersen, (Cell Biology) received the Evangeline T. Papageorge Distinguished Teaching Award. A faculty member since 1993, Dr. Petersen has been nominated for the Papageorge Award every year he has been here.

Robert DeHaan, (Cell Biology) was presented with the Thomas Jefferson Award for distinguished service to the university, and his wife, Marianne Scharbo-DeHaan, an associate professor in the School of Nursing, received the Emory Williams Award for Distinguished Teaching in the professional schools. This marks the first time that the university's highest faculty honors have gone to a married couple.
